Psalm 39:1-13

Chapter 39
To the director, to Jeduthun. A psalm. To David. 1 I said, "I will guard my ways from sinning with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as a barrier before the wicked opposite me." 2 I was silent with silence; I kept silent from good, and my pain was stirred up. 3 My heart was hot within me; in my meditations a fire burned— I spoke with my tongue. 4 Make known to me, LORD, my end and the measure of my days—what it is. I will know how frail I am. 5 Behold, you have made my days mere handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing before you. Surely every man at his best is all vapor, all Adam. Selah. 6 Surely a man walks about as a shadow—surely they make noise as vapor; he piles up wealth, but he does not know who will gather it. 7 And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you. 8 Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of a fool. 9 I am silent; I will not open my mouth, for you have done it. 10 Remove your blow from me; I am consumed by the rebuke of your hand. 11 With rebukes for iniquity you discipline man, and you consume his desire like a moth; surely every human is vanity. Selah. 12 Hear my prayer, O LORD, and my cry; listen to my tears. Do not be silent, for I am a sojourner with you, a resident alien like all my fathers. 13 Spare me, and I will recover before I go and am no more.
